Vibrant and Luscious with a Splash of Lemon

Fragrance of the Day: Kayali Capri In A Bottle - Lemon Sugar (Floral Fruity Gourmand)

Today I’m going to be doing a wear test of the Kayali Capri In A Bottle Lemon Sugar (this is an affiliate link; I do make a commission if you purchase at no cost to you) fragrance. This fragrance is such a huge hit for the warmer months and warmer climates. It is one of my personal favorites, and I want to tell you guys why from my POV. I have written a few short blurbs about this fragrance in my Sephora Discovery Set post, but it wasn't as in-depth as this one. ** Please read What is Anosmia? (I spray my perfumes in these areas: inside of my forearm, the back of my knees, the sides and back of my neck, and then on my clothes)

Initial Spray:

At initial spray, you are immediately hit with the zesty lemon notes of this fragrance. Then the vanilla follows, intertwining the two notes into a zesty, sweet summer smell. It's like a lemon drop with a sugar rim packaged into a bottle. For a split second, you're a walking lemon drop ready for anyone daring to take a sip. Buuuuuut, that mood and vibe fades pretty quickly, unfortunately.

1-2 Hours:

Where you were once a walking lemon drop with a sugar rim that deserved to be licked, you are now a bowl of vanilla ice cream with lemon zest sprinkled throughout, that deserves to be savored with each scoop. If it makes you feel any better, you can have a graham cracker on the side, for a little bit of crunch. (There are 0 notes and accords referencing graham crackers or the aroma of one, they just go well with vanilla ice cream).

The lemony notes that once started strong actually fade as quickly as they showed up. Honestly, it is disappointing. As much as I love Kayali, they're not above criticism. By now, in the 1-2 hour mark, the sugar and vanilla have taken over this fragrance, with a little bit of the lemon notes peeking through. The freesia notes in this fragrance make the perfume smell bright! It's like small bursts of fresh flowers that come through. I will say, despite the lemon losing its power, the rest of the notes and accords balance each other out.

3-5 Hours:

Around this time the vanilla and freesia notes are shining through. They're intermingled together beautifully. The florals keep the fragrance bright and fresh. With the vanilla and sugar notes keeping the fragrance sweet. A little bit of lemon comes through but it's not that strong. Despite the lack of citrus, it's a nice warm and bright everyday summer fragrance.

I did wear this fragrance around the 4th of July to an outdoor event. July is a disgustingly hot month, but this withheld in the heat. I had a hand fan with me and everytime I fanned myself I could smell the sugary sweet smell of the fragrance being fanned through the air. There is longevity to the fragrance just only in some aspects.

6-8 Hours:

As the day winds down so does this fragrance. You're left with just the vanilla and sugar notes. A little bit of the bright notes of the fressias is there. It's mainly just vanilla and sugar.

Final Thoughts:

As I said before, Kayali is not above criticism just because they're one of my favorite perfume companies. So, with that being said, the fact that this fragrance loses its lemon notes so fast is disappointing, especially because it's in the product name. I wish they prioritized the lemon notes over the sugar notes. I feel like the vanilla would've been able to carry the sugar notes through this fragrance if the lemon notes were heavily prioritized.

Now, yes, one can argue Kayali is intended for layering, which is true. However, some people just want to wear one single fragrance without having to layer it with another. I think they should be able to experience the full perfume without having to layer it with another one.

As a fragrance layering girly, I will say I do like this fragrance for layering purposes. It gives room for play, which is always fun for me. I would definitely layer this with Forvr Mood's Hard to Get (that post is coming soon). I don't know of any other citrus perfumes that could be layered with this, as I'm not typically a citrus girly, but you can comment recommendations down below.

All in all, I think this is a good perfume. Best for the layering girlies.
